Biographie

Léopold Sédar Senghor a été le premier président du Sénégal (6 septembre 1960 - 31 décembre 1980). Il était également connu comme poète et théoricien de la culture. Il a cofondé avec Aimé Césaire le mouvement de la Négritude. Idéologiquement socialiste, il a néanmoins favorisé, en tant que président du Sénégal, le maintien de liens étroits avec la France et le monde occidental. Il est considéré comme l'un des intellectuels africains les plus importants du XXe siècle. Il a été le premier Africain à être élu à l'Académie française (1983).

Biography

Léopold Sédar Senghor took to office as the 1st President of Senegal (6 September 1960 - 31 December 1980) and was also known as a poet and cultural theorist. He co-funded with Aimé Césaire the Négritude movement. Ideologically a socialist, as President of Senegal he nonetheless favoured the maintenance of close ties with France and the western world. He is revered as one of the most important African intellectuals of the 20th century. He was the first African to be elected at the Académie française (1983).
