Milton Obote a été le deuxième président de l'Ouganda (15 avril 1966 - 25 janvier 1971 et 17 décembre 1980 - 27 juillet 1985), ainsi que le deuxième Premier ministre de l'Ouganda (30 avril 1962 - 15 avril 1966). Obote a été accusé d'un complot de contrebande d'or avec un commandant des forces armées ougandaises. Lorsque le gouvernement a demandé une enquête sur lui, il a suspendu la constitution et s'est autoproclamé président, attaquant le palais du président de l'époque, Mutesa, et le poussant à l'exil. Après une tentative d'assassinat en 1969, il a interdit tous les partis politiques rivaux et s'est érigé en souverain absolu. Il est renversé en 1971 alors qu'il se trouve à l'étranger. Il est ensuite réélu en 1980 et des accusations de truquage conduisent à une guérilla et au lancement de l'opération Bonanza. Il est finalement déposé à nouveau en 1985 par ses propres commandants militaires.

Biography

Milton Obote was the 2nd President of Uganda (15 April 1966 - 25 January 1971 and 17 December 1980 - 27 July 1985), he was also the 2nd Prime Minister of Uganda (30 April 1962 - 15 April 1966). Obote was accused of a plot to smuggle gold with a commander of the Ugandan armed forces. When the government called for him to be investigated he suspended the constitution and declared himself president, attacking the then president Mutesa's palace and sending him fleeing into exile. When an assassination attempt was made on him in 1969 he banned all rival political parties and making him absolute ruler. He was overthrown in 1971 whilst overseas. He was then re-elected in 1980 and accusations of rigging led to a guerrilla war and his launch of Operation Bonanza. He was eventually deposed again in 1985 by his own military commanders.
