Nwanyeruwa, également connue sous le nom de Madame Nwanyeruwa, était une travailleuse de marché connue pour ses efforts lors de la guerre des femmes d'Aba en 1929. Elle s'est opposée à l'introduction par l'Empire britannique de mesures fiscales à l'encontre des travailleuses pendant la Grande Dépression. Elle a pris la tête des femmes nigérianes dans la rébellion, en organisant des groupes issus de la société traditionnelle Igbo pour résister aux chefs Igbo locaux qui appliquaient les nouvelles lois. On estime que 50 à 60 femmes ont été tuées au cours des manifestations. Les efforts de Nwanyeruwa ont contribué à instiller un sentiment anticolonialiste dans les premiers jours du mouvement d'indépendance nigérian.
Biography
Nwanyeruwa, also known as Madame Nwanyeruwa, was a market worker known for her efforts during the Aba Women’s War of 1929. Resisting the British Empire’s introduction of taxation measures against women labourers during the Great Depression. She led Nigerian women in the rebellion, organising groups from the traditional Igbo society to resist local Igbo chiefs enforcing the new laws. It is estimated that 50-60 women were killed during the protests. Nwanyeruwa’s efforts helped to instil an anti-colonist sentiment in the early days of the Nigerian independence movement.
