Philomena Chelagat Mutai est une femme politique qui a remporté son premier siège parlementaire en 1972, à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans, face à onze autres candidats masculins. En tant que critique de gauche déclarée de Jomo Kenyetta (1964-1978) et de Daniel arap Moi (1978-2002), elle a ensuite travaillé comme membre du groupe politique Seven Bearded Sisters (sept sœurs barbues). Mutai a été incarcéré en 1975 et s'est ensuite exilé. Tout au long de sa carrière, elle a défendu l'inclusion des femmes dans les rôles civiques et dans la société, et a contribué à ouvrir la voie au multipartisme.
Biography
Philomena Chelagat Mutai was a politician winning her first parliamentary seat in 1972 at the age of twenty-five from eleven other male candidates. As an outspoken leftist critic of Jomo Kenyetta (1964-1978) and Daniel arap Moi (1978-2002), she later worked as a member of the political group Seven Bearded Sisters. Mutai was incarcerated in 1975 and later went into exile. Throughout her career, she championed the inclusion of women in civic roles and society, and helped to pave the way for multiparty politics.
