Biographie

Makarios III était un archevêque et homme politique chypriote grec. Il a été le premier président de Chypre entre 1960 et 1977 et a participé pour Chypre au 1er sommet du Mouvement des non-alignés, qui s’est tenu en septembre 1961 à Belgrade, en Yougoslavie. L’un des thèmes inscrits à l’ordre du jour était la décolonisation des pays africains. Le mouvement a été résumé par Fidel Castro dans sa Déclaration de La Havane de 1979 comme « garantissant l’indépendance nationale, la souveraineté, l’intégrité territoriale et la sécurité » des pays non alignés et pour lutter contre l’impérialisme, le colonialisme et d’autres formes d’agression et de domination.

Biography

Makarios III was a Greek-Cypriot archbishop and politician. He served as the first President of Cyprus between 1960-1977 and was a participant for Cyprus at the 1st Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, which took place in September 1961 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. One of the topics on the agenda was the decolonisation of African countries. The movement was summarised by Fidel Castro in his 1979 Havana Declaration as to ensure ‘the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security’ of non-aligned countries and to fight against imperialism, colonialism, and other forms of aggression and domination.
