Biographie

Grégoire Kayibanda a été le premier président du Rwanda (1er juillet 1962 - 5 juillet 1973), succédant à la présidence intérimaire de Dominique Mbonyumutwa lorsqu'il a été élu démocratiquement. Le Rwanda étant une colonie belge, Kayibanda a créé le Parmehutu ou Parti du mouvement d'émancipation hutu. Défenseur de l'« émancipation des Hutus », il rédige un manifeste en 1957, intitulé 'Bahutu Manifesto'. En 1973, le ministre de la défense, le général Juvénal Habyarimana, a fait un coup d'État militaire. Bien que ce coup d'État ait été jugé "bloodless", on pense que Kayibanda et sa femme sont morts de faim alors qu'ils étaient détenus par le nouveau gouvernement.

Biography

Grégoire Kayibanda was the 1st President of Rwanda (1 July 1962 - 5 July 1973), taking over from the interim presidency of Dominique Mbonyumutwa when he was democratically elected. As Rwanda was a colony of Belgium, Kayibanda created the Parmehutu or Party of the Hutu Emancipation Movement. An advocate of the 'Hutu emancipation' he authored a manifesto in 1957, entitled 'Bahutu Manifesto'. In 1973 there was a military coup by the defence minister Major General Juvénal Habyarimana, and although it was deemed "bloodless", it is believed Kayibanda and his wife were starved to death whilst being held by the new government.
