Biographie

Juvénal Habyarimana a été le deuxième président du Rwanda (5 juillet 1973 - 6 avril 1994). Avant sa carrière politique, il était officier de l'armée et a été, à un moment donné, chef de la garde nationale et de la police du pays. Il a mené le coup d'État contre son prédécesseur, estimant qu'il n'avait pas réussi à unir les factions en guerre dans le pays. Lui-même, ainsi que Cyprien Ntaryamira, le président du Burundi, et de nombreuses autres personnalités politiques influentes ont été tués lorsque son avion a été abattu. Bien que le chef du FPR, Paul Kagame, ait été accusé d'être l'instigateur de l'attaque, cela n'a jamais été prouvé de manière concluante. Son assassinat a déclenché des tensions ethniques dans la région et a contribué à déclencher le génocide rwandais.

Biography

Juvénal Habyarimana was the 2nd President of Rwanda (5 July 1973 - 6 April 1994). Prior to his political career he was an army officer and was, at one point, the head of the national guard and police for the country. He led the coup against his predecessor saying he had failed to join warring factions within the country. He, alongside Cyprien Ntaryamira, the President of Burundi, and numerous other influential political figures were killed when his plane was shot down. Although the leader of the RPF, Paul Kagame, was fingered as the instigator of the attack it has never been conclusively proven. His assassination ignited ethnic tensions in the region and helped spark the Rwandan Genocide.
