Biographie
Hastings Banda a été le premier président du Malawi (6 juillet 1966 - 24 mai 1994) et, avant cela, le premier ministre du Malawi (6 juillet 1964 - 6 juillet 1966), poste qu'il a obtenu lorsque le pays s'appelait le Nyasaland. Il a transformé le gouvernement en un État à parti unique et a été déclaré président à vie en 1971. Cependant, suite à une pression croissante tant au niveau national qu'international, un référendum a été organisé pour mettre fin au système de parti unique et a finalement été rejeté lors des élections.
Biography
Hastings Banda was the 1st President of Malawi (6 July 1966 - 24 May 1994) and prior to that Prime Minister of Malawi (6 July 1964 - 6 July 1966), gaining the post when the country was called Nyasaland. He changed the government to a one-party state and was declared President for Life in 1971. However, after increasing pressure both domestically and internationally, a referendum was called ending the one-party of system and was eventually defeated in elections.
