Jean-Jacques Démafouth a occupé le poste de ministre de la défense sous la présidence d'Ange-Félix Patassé. Lors d'une tentative de coup d'État contre le président, qui a échoué, Démafouth a été arrêté pour conspiration, bien qu'il ait été acquitté en 2002. Il s'est enfui en France et a été désigné comme suspect dans une affaire de meurtre d'assistants présidentiels par le nouveau président. Il s'est ensuite présenté à l'élection présidentielle en exil, mais sa candidature a d'abord été rejetée en raison de divergences entre son acte de naissance et son casier judiciaire. Il a été autorisé à se présenter, mais a été battu.
Biography
Jean-Jacques Démafouth held the office of Defence Minister under the presidency of Ange-Félix Patassé. When a coup was attempted on the president, and failed, Démafouth was arrested for conspiracy though he was acquitted in 2002. He fled to France and was named as a suspect in a murder case of presidential aides by the new president. He then ran for the presidency whilst in exile but was initially rejected due to discrepancies between his birth certificate and his criminal record. He was allowed to stand but was defeated.
